A checklist of the
Birds of Glendora, California
Compiled by Dick
Swinney
Copyright Aug.

Revised June, 2011
Date____Time____Observer______Temp.___Wind___Sky___
This list represents
those birds observed within Glendora City limits. In
addition to the
residential areas with modified environment, the range
includes the following
areas open to the public: Big Dalton Canyon
Wilderness Park (690
acres), the South Hills Wilderness Area (220 acres),
city trails in the Morgan
Ranch area (eastern), the Glendora Ridge Motor-
way, the Lower Monroe
Truck Trail, the Colby Trail, and the area surrounding
the Glendora Mountain Road
(often subject to closure). The elevations
within the area range from
700 feet to 3200 feet above sea level. Most of
the observations were made
below 1500 feet. This list contains 234 bird
species.
Common names conform to
the A.O.U. Check-List (7th ed., 1998) and
supplements, as adapted
from the Western Field Ornithologists’ California
Bird Records Committee
list (July 30, 2004), www.wfo-cbrc.org/cbrc/ca_list.
html. The birds will be
presented here in the same order as found in the
check-list mentioned
above. Forms and subspecific names have not been
used because of the
difficulty of identifying subspecies in the field.
Subspecies, however, have
been included in the “Selected Bird Sightings
of Glendora”, 2006,
pamphlet, which includes specific locations and dates
of unusual sightings.
They are also included in the Common & Scientific
Name Checklist.
Observations are by
Dick Swinney unless otherwise noted. The original
determination of species
abundance in the first publication in 1977 was
made with guidance from
Mike San Miguel Senior who made frequent
observations in the
Glendora area from 1964 to 1973. The author began
observations in 1969, and
continues to the present. The observations by
San Miguel and others are
noted.
The occurrence rating of water birds
has changed greatly due to the fact
that water is no longer
held in the two debris basins for long periods of
time. I continue to
monitor the water birds at the Big Dalton Dam and
include those sightings
in this checklist, even though the Dam is not open
to the public.
Occurrence ratings are shown as they were originally
determined. For water
birds, the present ratings are appro-
priate only when water is
present.

Classification
These classifications are
the result of impressions gained through
observations in the field.
They do not represent numerical status, but
relative frequency of a
given bird to other birds observed in the area.
A ABUNDANT - greatest
relative numbers
C COMMON
F FAIRLY COMMON
U UNCOMMON
R RARE - lowest relative
numbers, but seen every year
Cs CASUAL - not seen
every year
Ac ACCIDENTAL - seen fewer
than three times, not to be
expected
* Species observed nesting
in the checklist area
+ Current nesting status
uncertain, nested in the past
X Nest during years of
heavy rainfall and/or years of surface
water in streams and
seeps
Unusual occurrence - The
winter of 2006-7 was one of the
driest on record but
local surface water was abundant due
to the wettest year on
record the year before.

nesting season but nesting not
