Sat Morning Trail Hikes - Winter/Spring/Summer 2009

Glendora Trails Committee members conduct these hikes. These are not guided, nature discussion-oriented, as they are on the Tuesday evening walks. Participants are led over the trail routes listed below. Children 12 and under must have adult supervision. No pets, please! Members should bring a day-pack with 3 quarts of water and snacks. Long pants are recommended. Sunscreen, water, and a hat may be needed. Due to difficulty level and trail length, hiking times may vary. Any group wishing to do trail maintenance should call Dick Swinney at 963-5668 or email dswinney@roadrunner.com. If it is raining at the time of the hike, it will be canceled. The starting time is 8:00 a.m.

Lower Monroe Motorway - Mystic Canyon Trail
Jan. 31, 2009
A strenuous 4-mile hike. Park at the first horseshoe curve on Glendora Mt. Road at 1.0 mile north of Big Dalton Canyon Road. This is the site of the old Little Dalton Canyon Campground. If the gate is closed on Glendora Mountain Road, park here, at the gate parking lot, approximately 3/4-mile north of Big Dalton Canyon Road. We will hike up the Lower Monroe Motorway along the Little Dalton Canyon stream bottom. The mtwy. turns southward and continues to the junction of the Mystic Canyon Trail. The group will follow this trail down to Big Dalton Canyon.

Colby&Colby-Dalton Trails
Feb. 28, 2009
This is a moderate to strenuous 2.3-mile walk. Park at the north terminus of Loraine Avenue at the south trailhead of Colby Trail. The hike begins here and travels north and east to the junction of the Colby-Dalton Trail. The group descends into Little Dalton Canyon and truns west back to the starting point.

Garcia Trail
March 28, 2009
Park along Sierra Madre Avenue, as close as possible to the Los Angeles County Fire Station # 97, 3453 Sierra Madre Avenue in Azusa. The trail starts near the picnic tables at the fire station. This is a strenuous 2.4-mile round-trip hike to the top of the ridge at the Glendora Ridge Motorway. The group will return to the starting point by heading back down the way they came.

South Hills Trails
April 25, 2009
This is a moderate 1 & 1/2-mile walk, starting at the South Hills City Park, at the east terminus of Mauna Loa Avenue. The group will be using the Big Dalton Wash, Alosta Canyon, East View, North Spur, South Hills, and Wild Iris Trails.

Wren-Meacham Trail
May 30, 2009
This is a strenuous 2-mile walk. Park at the Glendora Equestrian Center at the southern end near the Trails Committee tool shed. The Equestrian entrance is at the junction of Glendora Mountain Road and Boulder Springs, approximately 1 quarter-mile north of Sierra Madre Avenue. The group will cross the Dalton Bridges near the Equestrian Center and turn north to Wren Canyon. The trail leads upward and to the northeast, until it reaches Meacham Canyon. The group will descend to the stream-side in Big Dalton Canyon and then return to the start, by walking on the Big Dalton Canyon and Glendora Mountain roads.

Colby & Colby-Dalton Trails
June 27, 2009
This is a moderate to strenuous 2.3-mile walk. Park at the north terminus of Loraine Avenue at the south trailhead of Colby Trail. The hike begins here and travels north and east to the junction of the Colby-Dalton Trail. The group descends into Little Dalton Canyon and turns west back to the starting point.

Tuesday Evening Hikes led by Dick Swinney
Walks are designed for the whole family, however, please check difficulty level indicated for each walk. No children under the age 12 are allowed without an adult who is responsible for them. No pets, please. Bring a flashlight, as the last 1/2 hour will be after sunset. Long pants are recommended. Walks last 1-1 & 1/2 hours and each one is scheduled for a different starting time because of the changing time of dusk.

Big Dalton Canyon Trail
August 25, 2009, 7:00 p.m.

This is an easy 1.2-mile hike along the stream bottom. Park at the Wren-Meacham & Mystic Canyon Trail Heads on Big Dalton Canyon Road. This is 0.6 miles east of Glendora Mountain Road. If you come to the amphitheater & campground, you’ve gone too far.

Bird Walk

April 18, 2008 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Park on Big Dalton Canyon Road, 0.8 miles east of Glendora Mountain Road at the Big Dalton Canyon Campground parking area. Walk will be on relatively flat ground. Bring binoculars and water.

Park at the east terminus of Mauna Loa Ave. at the South Hills City Park. Restrooms are available. From Glendora Ave., turn east onto Mauna Loa Ave. Check in at the green sign-in table to receive your trail assignment and your trail maintenance tool.
Volunteers are needed to maintain the trails in the South Hills Wilderness Area. Each participant will receive a free commemorative patch and lunch for helping their local environment. Individuals are asked to bring gloves, water, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Participants should wear long pants and sturdy shoes. They should bring water, sunscreen a bandana or hat, and bug repellent. Adults must supervise interested youth groups under age 18. Tools for trail work will be provided. Each individual will be asked to sign a liability release form. Youth without a sponsor must be 18 years of age. For additional information on this project or for preregistration procedures, contact Dick Swinney at 963-5668 & dswinney@roadrunner.com or Gordon Rowley at gonoro@verizon.net.

Glendora Trail Maps are available at the Community Services Department Office adjacent to the Glendora City Hall. These will show the trail areas in some detail.
If it is raining, at the time of the hike, it will be canceled.

Oct. 27, 2007 8:00 a.m.
South Hills Trail
This is a moderate one and one-half mile walk, starting at the Bonnie Cove south entrance of the South Hills Wilderness Area. Park under the 210 Fwy. at the north terminus of Bonnie Cove Ave., this is north of Gladstone. The group will head up the Bonnie Cove West Trail to the South Hills Trail (motorway). From here they will go east to the North Spur Trail and the East View Trail (south fork). The group will then head down and east to the Alosta Canyon Trail and back to the southwest to the South Hills Trail. The final leg of the walk will lead south to the Bonnie Cove East Trail and then back to the parking area.

Nov. 24, 2007 8:00 a.m.
Garcia Trail
This is a strenuous 2.4-mile hike round trip to Glendora Ridge Motorway. Park on Sierra Madre Ave. as close as you can get to the Los Angeles County Fire Station # 97, 8453 Sierra Madre Ave. in Azusa, near the Glendora boundary. Road construction will still be going on near the site. There is no shade along this trail so come prepared.

Jan. 26, 2008 8:00 a.m.
Little Dalton Canyon & Mystic Canyon Trails
This is a strenuous 5-mile walk ( 4 miles if the group decides to initiate a 1 mile car shuttle). Park along Glendora Mountain Road at the first U-shaped curve, approximately 1 mile north of Big Dalton Canyon Road. The group will walk up the Lower Monroe Motorway along the Little Dalton Canyon stream bottom. Much of the road has been washed away and there is now a trail in the stream bottom. When reaching the southern most point of the Monroe Motorway, the group will descend into Big Dalton Canyon via the Mystic Canyon Trail.

Feb. 23, 2008 8:00 a.m.
Wren-Meacham Trail
This is a strenuous two mile walk. Park at the Glendora Equestrian Center at the south end near the Trails Committee’s tool shed. An equestrian demonstration by Dorothy Hilliard and her horse will take place near the amphitheater at lunch-time. Individuals are asked to bring gloves, long pants, sturdy shoes, water, sunscreen, bandana/hat and bug repellent. Tools will be provided for you. Park at the Big Dalton Canyon Campground at 0.8 miles east of Glendora Mountain Road on Big Dalton Canyon Road.
