History of Glendora Roosting Parrot populations

Information from the Glendora Animal Control - 4 June 2007:

The only parrot species reported to the Animal Control during 2005-2007, were the Red-crowned Parrots. One young and 1 injured adult was picked up. The department is not currently aware of any present roosting or nesting areas within Glendora City Limits.

On June 29, 2007, I talked with employees of a private tree trimming business who were trimming Ash trees in the 600 block of N Vermont Ave. I asked them if they had seen any parrot nests in Glendora recently. They said not this year. In the past, they would sometimes take them home and raise them. There are new state and city laws that make it a crime to remove or interfere with nesting birds when commercially trimming trees. They said they would have to report the location of the nest to the city if one was located. The city would have to take appropriate measures.

Information from conversation with Barbara Duke, Heber Street resident - late May 2007:

Six young Blue-crowned & several young Yellow-headed Parrots were picked up by the Glendora Animal Control in 1988. All young had become separated from their nests. The nesting location was at the jnct. of Meda & Cullen Aves. Mrs. Duke was a former employee of the Glendora Animal Control during that time. Some birds were given to a Vetenary Clinic in San Dimas, others were cared for by members of the animal control.

Abbreviations for Parrot & Parakeet species reported in this paper:

BF - Blue-fronted Parrot
YH -Yellow-headed Parrot
LC - Lilac-crowned Parrot
RC - Red-crowned Parrot
RL - Red-lored Parrot
RR - Rose-ringed Parakeet
YC - Yellow-crowned Parrot

300 - 500 block of Heber St.
Description: one city block consisting of numbers 300-500 oriented E to W
Roost Trees: Central American Ash including Eucalyptus Trees on Grand Ave. at jnct. of Heber & Grand.
Locations of roost trees: 346, 347,352, 353, 358, 359, 405, 410, 411,

I did not discover the Heber Roosting Site until late Oct. , 2006. Parrots left that location just three days later. They would fly over and some would land for awhile and then they would fly to the west. Roosting here began again on May 25, 2007. Heber residents noted that parrots have been roosting here since 2001(?). Rosaland Hudock stated that approx. 5 years ago when the Parrots were roosting, the Ash Trees were trimmed and the birds left and began roosting in the 400 block of Northridge Ave. I have not yet been able to confirm that with any of the current residents living on Northridge. There is currently only 1 large Central American Ash on that street.

500 blocks of Glendora/Vermont Aves.
These 2 blocks are parallel to each other and are consecutive streets. Both streets were often used as roost sites on the same evening. Most roosting at this site was confined to N Vermont Ave. only. The N Glendora Ave. trees were then used as pre-roost trees in addition to others. Roosting never took place exclusively on N Glendora Ave.

RR not visible until it flew to RT, no crow harassment like the previous night. The presence of more crows the past 2 nights may be causing a change in the former PR behavior of visible interactions among the parrots. Parrots shy from the PRT’s when crow numbers increase at the site. Several parrots roosted at the N Glendora Ave. site for at least the second night. Most birds are still using the RTs at N Vermont.
Crows have always flown SW when leaving the roost site.. Residents at 536 N. Vermont put up an owl statue above their lights in the front yard near the RT.
