Selected
Bird Sightings for the City of Glendora

All observations by Dick
Swinney unless otherwise noted
This list gives information
regarding significant observations of birds found within the Glendora
City limits. This is meant to be a supplement to “A Checklist
of the Birds of Glendora, California”, Nov. 2006. These
sightings provided the basis for many of the entries found in the
bird checklist. The bird species listed below may not be uncommon in
our area, but the time of year observed may be unusual for that
particular migratory species. Many records of nesting are noted here
as well.
There are two areas in
Glendora that have been subject to development in the last thirty
years that seem to have impacted several bird species. One is in the
northern area along both sides of Glendora Mt. Rd. at 0.5 mi. N. of
Sierra Madre Ave. The other is in the central-western portion of
town immediately south of Sandberg Middle School. There are no known
sightings of Vesper Sparrows in Glendora since the conversion of
these two areas. In addition, the sightings of Western Meadowlarks,
American Pipits, Savannah Sparrows and Loggerhead Shrikes has
decreased. The occurrence of water and shore birds has also greatly
declined in the last twenty years because water is no longer held in
the Big and Little Dalton Debris Basins for long periods of time. I
continue to monitor the water birds at the Big Dalton Dam which is
closed to the public.
Observations were made
by Dick Swinney unless otherwise noted. Bird species are listed here
in the same order as the checklist. Subspecies are noted in this
paper and in the scientific name list when known. They do not appear
on the Glendora Bird Checklist.

Nesting has also been observed at this site in the past. When the
Ash loose their leaves the parrots no longer roost there. Roosting
began in the 500 block of N. Vermont Ave. on Mach 25, 2007 in the
same ash species. As was true at the Heber site, crows follow the
parrots to their roost site and perch near them until dark. At the
Heber site, crows would arrive an hour or two before the parrots and
perch conspicuously on the highest branches of the trees the parrots
usually roost in.

Water birds at the fountain & pond in
Oakdale Memorial Park & Mortuary, Glendora
observations - 12/1/06 - 12/5/07
Only the swans here are
owned by the Park, these never leave the Park. The number of
domestic geese and ducks that are released at the pond each year
varies greatly. Most or all of the migratory ducks leave the pond
each day at dusk. Most return at dawn, some come in later. The
number of observations each month is not consistent but is noted.

17. Highest number of bird species at
Oakdale Memorial Park in one day:
3/14/07 28 species
18. Observations on
bird social interactions - 5/25/07 - Little Dalton Cnyn.
Seven bird species
observed in a Quercus agrifolia var.
agrifolia - Coast
Live Oak. Williams Fire of 2002 burned the tree. Resprouting in the
lower portion of the tree only. All branches used by the birds were
fire killed and bare. All participated in flights of 10 to 40 ft.
in the air and then retuning to a dead branch on the tree. Most
birds flew directly to other birds including their own species at
some time during this display, causing the attacked bird to fly to
another location on the tree. Displaced birds would often then rise
in the air with the attacking bird while both of them were calling
and/or singing. Birds were still interacting when I left the
location. One-half hour later, there were 4 Phainopepplas on the
tree only.
Bird species:
Scrub Jays 3
Acorn Woodpecker 3
Bullocks Oriole 1 M 3 F
Ash-throated Flycatcher 1
Phainopepla 2 M
Black-headed Grosbeak 2 M
1 F
Northern Flicker 1
At least 17 birds were
involved. The number of each species listed was determined by the
highest number of each bird species seen at one time. Therefore, this
is a conservative number. Some of them left the location and may not
have returned, while others could have joined in later without me
knowing. The Northern Flicker was present the last 3 minutes and did
not interact to the same degree as the other species.
16. Unusual nesting
records during 2007
Nesting recorded for nine
bird species not normally nesting within the city limits, during one
of the driest years on record. The presence of surface water in
local streams and seeps usually accompanies years of heavy rainfall.
Since the previous winter was the wettest on record for much of the
San Gabriel Valley communities, several canyons still had surface
water through June. Our two major streams with potential summer
surface water are the Big and Little Dalton Canyon drainages. This
includes Pine Canyon, Monroe Canyon, Fall Canyon, Mystic Canyon and
Pavil Canyon within the Big Dalton drainage system. Five species
listed here have never before been recorded nesting in Glendora. The
other species occasionally nest when surface stream water is present,
which normally accompanies years of heavy rainfall. All of the
following species were recorded nesting below 1500 feet.
Nesting species:
Western Bluebird
